Try to find the escape of surf, and did you imagine the situation Indonesia like in the ’80s or want to know Bali in the late of ’80s and ’90s, you better to check the Simeulue Islands has one of the best-established surf scenes in Indonesia. And it’s no surprise for the 70% of waterland Indonesia, with scores of stretches of coastline offering numerous surfing opportunities for everyone from total novices to seasoned experts. The climate “forever summer” also means warmer waters, almost guaranteed sunshine, and quality conditions for catching that perfect tube. Here’s a rundown of some of the best spots in the Simeulue to break out the boardshorts and surfboard.
Dylan’s right
Dylan’s right this well-known surf spot is located in the middle of one of the Simeulue Island’s Best resorts – Salt Surf Resort– on the south coast of Simeulue. But don’t let that put you off, it’s very popular for a reason, breaking on a volcanic platform for a long wave with some barrelling. Waves reach between one and three meters, with smaller ones suitable for intermediates, though it can get challenging on the larger swells. Due to some fast sections and sharp rocks, it’s not recommended for novices.
Thailand
There’s also an easier left reef break on the Southeast of Simeulue called Thailand with a steep drop and plenty of shoulder for cutbacks, plus a heavy, shallow, fast right to the east. The potential for good surf extends for miles up the coast with indented bays, scraggy reefs, and miles of volcanic sand beach breaks; however, weather conditions are treacherous and the lack of safe anchorages makes it a navigational nightmare.
Wontong
Another super popular place to surf, this time situated on the South coast of Wontong next to Busung beach. It has become one of the hidden and busiest surf spots on the island thanks to the consistency and quality of surfable waves. The main take off points break over a big rock reef a few meters below, with the left offering medium speed, and the right shorter but with the decent quality wave.
Tea Bag
Considered by many to be one of the best surf spots in Indonesia, Tea Bag ( taken from the name of the island Teupah ) also has the bonus of being just outside Simeulue Island. This right-hander breaks over a volcanic ledge with the barreling section running in shallow water the whole length of the break. Conditions are consistently good offering some undeniably world-class surfing. Expect wave heights of up to four meters between April and October at high tide.
This break is located in the uninhabited island (and protected island) of Simeulue just opposite Dylan’s Surf Spot most northerly resort of Salt. Despite being accessible only by Boat, it can still get crowded thanks to some of the surfer, best right-hand waves and some perfect tube sections. It’s also probably something to do with it being the longest surfable wave in the Simeulue Island and is suitable for intermediate to advance of surfer.
Alus alus Beach
Located off the fishing village of the longest beach coastline in Simuelue, Alus alus beach on the Southeastern coast, this is one of the island’s best year-round surf spots. Entry to the water can be tricky, do not enter from the rock! But conditions mean consistently good quality waves with short explosive sections breaking on both sides. The swell can be strong with a steep bottom, so it’s not one for beginners, though attracts a constants streams of local and experienced surfers.
For those new to surfing, the mellow and foamy waves at Alus-Alus on northwest coast are ideal. Breaks can be a bit disordered, though rides are often long and it’s a good all-year spot. Just watch out for the swell change, as it’s popular with primarily a closeout wave zone. Generally, however, it doesn’t tend to get too busy, even at peak season.
Generally, Simeulue Island is a great spot for the more experienced surfer if the nearby of Banyak, Nias or Mentawai is busy – though it can still get crowded at Juli-September. Breaks can be fast with some semi-submerged rocks to watch out for, but long barrels are not rare and can be one of the finest surf spots on the country on the right day.
You might love to explore the Island more, its the big area from west to east takes 12 hours drive, so you can explore more and more place and surf spot.

Introduction of West Java
West Java is located in the western part of Java island, on the south side directly facing the Indian Ocean, Jakarta and Banten province in the west, the Java Sea in the north and the province of Central Java in the east.
West Java was the province with the largest population in Indonesia, with a population of 43,907,040 according to the census of 2010 and more than two-thirds of its population residing in urban areas, the majority of the population are Sundanese so they call themselves, the land of their birth and the local language.
On the eastern side of the province bordering Central Java, the population has been mixed with Java, whereas in the areas bordering the metropolitan Jakarta are Betawi people and urban society from all over Indonesia. The inhabitants’ occupation is mainly manufacturing workers in urban areas, farmers in the rural areas and fishermen in the coastal areas.
The history of West Java is not separated from the rise and fall of great kingdoms in Java, Tarumanegara is a kingdom ruled first recorded in West Java, It’s successor is Padjajaran which is still in the same period with Majapahit kingdom in East Java. In the 16th century, the kingdom of Demak Muslim who became the successor of Majapahit spreads its influence to West Java through Cirebon, although not yet fully subdued, since that time the Kingdom of Sunda Padjadjaran began to weaken. At the end of the 16th century, Sundanese kingdom entirely falls into the hands of Banten kingdom until the arrival of the Dutch to the archipelago.
West Java has a typical culture, language and society that have a wide range of arts, crafts, and food are also typical. People of West Java has a brighter skin color than the residents who live on the island of Java in general, the capital of West Java, Bandung is famous with the girls are beautiful, in Sundanese language called “neng geulis” which means beautiful girl.
Besides West Java has interesting places to visit, Bandung is the textile center in Indonesia which is heaven for travelers to shop. Natural attractions is equally interesting, you can ask your travel agent to design adventure activities to explore interesting places in West Java, dive into the culture, feel the hospitality of its peoples, and enjoy culinary delights and distinctive taste.
Season and Weather
Almost all regions in Indonesia has two main seasons: the rainy season and the dry, the difference is the arrival time of the season and intensity, the more to the east the season arrival is getting late and the less rainfall compared to areas in the west. In West Java, the dry season usually lasts from October to May and the remainder from December to April is the rainy season, usually occurs in the afternoon, sometimes in the morning, but in January to February rains can falls all day.
The South East trade winds typically last between 11 am to 4 pm, so the best time to surf is in the morning or in the afternoon. Temperatures in the dry season ranged between 230C at night – 340C in the midday, while in the rainy season ranged between 270C – 300C with high humidity levels.

Surfing in West Java
There are many surf spots on the south coast of West Java that deal directly with the Indian Ocean, Pangandaran in the east end of the borders with Central Java, Ujung Genteng and Pelabuhan Ratu in Sukabumi or in Sawarna and Panaitan in Banten. In the offshore area, there are several small islands which are excellent for surfing activities such as Tinjil Island, Panaitan island and Dili island. Throughout the year we can get consistent waves for surfing in this area, but the best is in the middle of the dry season between May till October, usually not too crowded and not too quiet so you will not surf alone, the average height of the waves were 6-12 feet or 2-4 meters. For surfing sport hobbyist, they would be familiar with G-Land Plengkung, one of the beaches on the southern coast of Java, precisely in Banyuwangi, this beach has one of the best waves in the world for surfing sport, you do not need all the way come to Hawaii to be able to enjoy the best waves for surfing, Plengkung beach is enough, in his best season between the May through September, the waves on the shore could reach 6-8 m high and come in one after another as the series of 7 to 8 with a wave length could reach 2 kilometers, typical of such waves is what surfing hobbyist favored because it produces quite a long time to enjoy the roll of the waves, because the height of the waves, beginer surfers not recommended at this beach, only those who already a professional surfer can surf on this beach. However for those of you who are beginners can still surf at a location not far from the Plengkung beach, there is a place called tiger tracks, still in Plengkung coastline, on that beach the waves are not as high as in plengkung, novice surfers can act here.
There are 3 wave levels in plengkung, the first is the KongWaves, the highest level, wave height at this level in the range of 6-8 meters, professional surfers always wanted this typical waves. Second, Speedis Waves with wave heights between 5-6 meters, and Third, Many Waves with a height of 3-4 meter, suitable for beginner surfers who want to train his surfing skills, because the height of the waves that come one after another, Plengkung beach owned the label The Saven Giant Waves Wonder. However, to be able to enjoy the waves roll the surfers had to swim to the middle of the surfboard approximately 1 kilometer from the shore, tired of swimming with large distances will be paid off when surfers can slide in between the high tide of Plengkung waves.
Plengkung beach also has a G-Land designation for several reasons, first because it is taken from the name of the Grajakan gulf where plengkung beach located, “G” here means Grajakan, second “Green” because the beach location is in the Alas Purwo National Park, one of the oldest natural tropical forests in Java, are still maintained continuity to date, and thrid “Great” because the waves are great and the last because the shoreline of this area resembles the letter “G”.
Access road to the Plengkung beach is quite heavy, because it is located in the district Banyuwangi on the eastern of Java, we also should walk along Alas Purwo National Park, but do not need to worry, because transportation access is availabe to the point of the beach. Land access from the District. Jember or Banyuwangi district will pass Benculuk, from here there are motorcycles or cars that can be rented to Alas Purwo heading to a place called Pancur, the last location where private vehicles are prohibited from futher entering, from Pancur pickup transportation is provided that will take you directly to the Plengkung beach with rental cost about Rp. 200.000, -. Generally, surfers around the world come to plengkung from Bali by sea using special Speedboat.
And what about the lodging accommodations? In the coastal area, there are several surf camp facilitate the surfers who wanted to stay, but unfortunately is quite expensive for the local tourists, apparently this surf camp is more dedicated for foreign surfers and therefore transactions in these surf camps can using dollar currencies. Actually it would be more accommodating again if in the camp area is also provided for the local surfers for rent at affordable prices, to allow local surfers linger to enjoy the magnificent surf of Plengkung beach in his best seasons.
