Overview
Mount Argopuro, a former active volcano in East Java, stands at 3,088 meters above sea level and forms part of the Iyang mountain range in Probolinggo. Managed under the supervision of the Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) Jember, Argopuro is renowned for having the longest trekking route on the island of Java, making it a true challenge for hikers seeking adventure and endurance.
Beyond its natural beauty, Argopuro is steeped in history. The mountain preserves relics from the Prehistoric era through the Japanese occupation, offering a unique blend of cultural heritage and wilderness. Among its multiple peaks, Rengganis Peak (sometimes referred to as Clement Peak) is especially significant. Here, hikers find archaeological remains in the form of terrace complexes with traces of ancient structures, believed to be linked to the legendary Goddess Rengganis of the Majapahit Kingdom.
Trekking Routes
There are two main ascent routes commonly used by climbers:
- Via Bremi, Probolinggo This route is shorter and allows trekkers to reach the summit more quickly. However, the terrain is steep and physically demanding, requiring stamina and preparation. It is ideal for experienced hikers who want a direct challenge.
- Via Baderan, Besuki This path is longer but offers gentler slopes and more gradual climbs. It is often chosen by those who prefer a more relaxed pace and scenic journey through forests and savannas.
Many climbers choose to ascend via Bremi and descend via Baderan, or vice versa, to experience both routes and maximize the adventure.
