Discovering the Most Exotic Lombok Island – Indonesia

Moarning at Tetebatu village - Lombok

Discovering the Exotic Lombok Island – Indonesia

Lombok is known as one of the most beautiful islands in Indonesia. For the last 10 years, It is known for its gorgeous beaches, party island, the Gilis and the strong affinity for the arts. Recently, Lombok had been the chosen port for cruise ships such as Holland America, Princess Cruise, Costa and Celebrity Cruise exploring the Southeast Asian region.

Although not as popular as Bali, Lombok is gifted with incredible beauty, Bali will be crowded for the next couple years, now Lombok has to cover the tourist demand for summer vacation.

Part of its uniqueness is its undeveloped nature and beyond tourist expectation, coupled with a very relaxed and low key environment. Some travelers that make their way escape to Lombok are adventure-seeking souls who absolutely love being outdoors. These type of explorers are drawn to the island’s varied landscapes and activities such as surfing, hiking, snorkeling, and diving.

One of the highlights for many adventurous visitors coming to the Lombok region is trekking Mt. Rinjani, the most highest  active volcano in Lombok.

What about Domestic tourists? Now they prefer vacationing in Lombok than in Bali for a couple of reasons. But most of the main reason is perhaps the big difference in the overall travel costs.

In Lombok, accommodation, food and sightseeing tours are much cheaper. Let get closer to know about Lombok, local people still learn how to accept tourism as a culture, and yes, that a large part of it is not mass tourism-oriented. Large gated complexes and noisy bars have not taken over the beach scene until 2011.

If you want to truly experience classic Lombok, consider a homestay in farmhouses, mountainside villages or simple homes on the beachside even if you are in the most party part of Gili, they provide it.

Try to stay with a family, and get some bonuses advantages such as learning the authentic way of island living especially for the Sasak people, in the main Island or Bajau in Gili. You might join hosts to go for fishing, farming, hunting and even show you how to cook local dishes.

And about the dishes, Lombok is known for its red and green chilies hot spicy cuisine. This is quite understandable for a “Lombok” that literally means chili in the Bahasa Indonesia language. Find your adventure to taste local dishes and accompany it with the fiery condiment called sambal pelecing .

The beaches of Lombok are quite stunning and they do not get as crowded as Bali’s. If you long for seclusion and the surfing area, venture to the southwest section of the island. Lombok also was known by its sandy stretches that can muster up hollow speed waves.

A lot of surfing spots around the island, this is why the island receives a large number of surfers every year. Some of the most popular places to tackle the surfing breaks include Kuta Lombok, Gerupuk, Areguling, Senggigi, the tiny Gili Nanggu Island and Bangko-Bangko (Desert Point).

To get a taste of Lombok’s passion for the arts, organize some village visits either on your own or with a tour company. By doing so, you will not miss the opportunity to see how locals expertly dye fabrics using the old traditional technique called ikat. Some of the local artisans who can masterfully make and decorate pots.

Don’t forget to drop by the Sayang Sayang art market, and shop for excellent locally hand made crafts and products like pearl-decorated wooden boxes and baskets made of strong rattan.

Since the infrastructure getting better day by day, the best way to get around Lombok is to drive your own vehicle as public transport on the island is unreliable. You have the option to rent a car and a driver but you can also drive a motorcycle if you have enough experience driving one. The roads on the island are in fairly good condition even after the earthquake a few months ago, so it’s easy to drive around the coast, countryside and even the highlands.

Senggigi and Pemenang one of the most scenic areas you have to drive through is the coastal road between. Stretching 21 kilometers, this road highlights incredible views of beaches and inlets stop by and take pictures, do something beautiful here.

Every day is Sunday in Bali

Every day is Sunday in Bali – this is the Island’s slogan for their tourism campaign, most widely spread by the beach boys around the town. It’s a very catchy phrase that the Bali island could easily live up to due to its abundance of natural beauty and its low cost of living. If you’re on a tight budget and you badly need to have a getaway, you will get more than your money’s worth here.

Food

The Bali is the only Hindu island in Indonesia means their food choices aren’t just limited Balinese cook and western food, since a lot of Balinese and most people out of Bali such workers, and tourist required is to halal delicacies, some restaurant focus to serve halal food, aside from the fact that their food is also cheap. A sumptuous meal at a regular restaurant would only cost you $2 at the most and dining at a posh restaurant would just cost you $5 for a full meal with sides and drinks. Not only will your soul be filled with wanderlust, but your tummy will also be satisfied with the Bali island’s sumptuous delicacies.

Attractions

Local attractions are mostly open parks, gardens, mountains, cultural sites, waterfalls, underwater, and beaches, which means there’s really nothing for you to spend on to enjoy their attractions. Unless you intentionally go to their theme parks which are not what the Bali island is famous for.

Beaches

The Bali island is so blessed with beautiful beaches. There are many open resorts that you could head on to if you don’t want to spend a dime enjoying their beaches. If you want to party by the beach, you can travel to “Nusa Penida,” but if you prefer a more laid back beach experience, Kuta, Canggu, and Sanur offer the best beaches and resorts for this experience. And again, they’re all very cheap.

Transportation

Getting around is very easy. Their motorbike and online car are more efficient than buses and they could literally take you from point a to point b easily. And, sometimes, the online cab could even take you to the doorsteps of malls, literally. What’s great about it is that it’ also very cheap: $1-2 for a one-way fare to nearby places, while $5 for those that are a bit far. But their taxis are not cheap, $7 could already take you very far, literally.

Accommodation

Perhaps this is the cheapest destination for such a beautiful Bali island where you could enjoy an extended vacation experience, even hotels here will provide you a pampering experience for a very affordable price. A night at a 4-star hotel in Bali would just cost you around $30 to $50. If you’re backpacking you could just imagine how cheap it is to just rent a bed at a hostel for a night.

Aside from the abundance of nature-centric attraction, taking into the equation the cost of living in the Bali, budget traveler or not, you’ll surely have more fun here than elsewhere.

[:en]A Guide to Know Before Doing Fun Dives in Kuta Lombok[:id]A Guide to Fun Dives in Kuta Lombok[:]

[:en][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Free diving in Wakatobi
Freediving as an alternative

Scuba diving is a great hobby; nothing is more amazing than going from country to country exploring the unique dive sites and swimming alongside the different marine life that each country offers.
If you’ve been diving for a long time, it can be rather hard to find new places that you haven’t explored and though going back to a diving site you’ve dived at before can provide a good time, it won’t give you that thrill you get from exploring the un-dived territory.

One place I’m sure you’ve not had the pleasure of visiting is Kuta Lombok.

Kuta Lombok

Kuta is a coastal town found in the South of Lombok in Indonesia and is a town that is popular with the surfers due to its fantastic beaches and excellent wave breaks but isn’t well known among divers but soon will be due to its unspoiled reefs and rich marine life.
The people of Kuta are a friendly bunch of people who have remained unaffected by tourism and still live in the traditional way of a sleepy fishing village. The Kuta locals live in housing clusters called kampungs and cook their food over a wood fire.
Not only are the dive sites great but Kuta also has some of the best beaches in the whole of Indonesia if not in the whole world, with its pure white sand and crystal clear oceans, it’s the kind of beaches that photographers dream of.

Key Dive Sites
Some of the dive sites you will have the chance of visiting while staying in Kuta include:

The Cathedral – A site for only the experienced diver. It’s a large pinnacle that goes down to about 50 meters and has a steep wall that is covered with Sponges, Soft Corals, and Tunicates. You will find the bigger marine animals here such as Tuna, Barracudas, Eagle Rays and Grey Reef Sharks.

Gerupuk Bay – This site is a wall that goes down 30 meters deep and is overgrown by amazing hard corals and there are a number of crevices and niches where you can find things such as Crabs and Lobsters. Apart from Crabs and Lobsters, you will also see Tuna, Stingrays, Sweet Lips and Parrotfishes.

Gili Medas – A beautiful reef that has a wide range of reef animals such as Sweet Lips, Nudibranchs and Lionfish. This dive starts at 13 meters and reaches a depth of 34 meters and apart from the reef animals that have already been mentioned you will also see Mackerel, Barracudas, Surgeonfishes and Eagle Rays.

Boulder City – Made up of a number of big rocks that come together to form hundreds of swim troughs, this diving site will allow you to see Sharks, Angelfishes, Sweet Lips, and Napoleon fishes.
The above dive sites are only a few of the many sites you’ll have a chance to visit. Other sites you’ll get to visit include Gili Srang, The Magnet, JJR, and Coral Garden.

When you’re not diving there are a number of other things you can do like renting a motorbike and exploring the coastline, relaxing on the beautiful beaches or going on a tour of the village with a local guide.

Reaching Kuta isn’t difficult and is only a 20-minute drive from Lombok International Airport or if you’ve traveled by sea, it’s only an hour drive away from Lembar harbor.
If you are looking for your next diving destination then Kuta Lombok should be at the top of your list. Not only does it have a wide range of diving sites each of which provides a unique diving experience but it also has friendly locals, amazing beaches, great accommodation for all budgets, excellent food and gives you the ability to become one of the privileged few to have taken in its amazing scenery first hand.

Diving in the Wakatobi – How to Get There

[:en]

It is a good news for everyone who loves undersea tourism. You do not need to make every effort and waste your time anymore to go to Wakatobi Marine National Park, South East Sulawesi Indonesia, a great place to explore the amazing undersea scenery. From now on, it is easier and faster to get there than before, because many direct flights are scheduled from and to Wakatobi.
Some time ago, to reach Wakatobi, the traveler must first travel to Makassar or Kendari (province capital of South East Sulawesi) by planes or ferries from Jakarta or Bali (to the present time, there are no direct international flights to Makassar). Then, they must connect their travel by plane or boat/local ferries to go to Bau-Bau (transit town) before they got the point of Wakatobi.
And the good news is, Usman Syafei Jamal as Minister of Transportation of Indonesian Government, made Matahora Airport official at the end of June 2009. The airport had been developed since 2007, located in Wangi-Wangi, a regional capital of Wakatobi. Matahora’s runways are 1400 m and 30 m of its length and width. Next, it will be added to become 2100 m in 2010 in order that runway can be landed by plane as Boeing 737.

Thus, there are two airports operated in Wakatobi. The first one is Maranggo Airport that operated by Wakatobi Dive Resort who serves direct flight occasionally from Bali to Tomia (exclusive tourist package/air charter).
The second one is the airport that we have just talked about above, Matahora Airport. By now, there is only SusiAir who operates ten flights per week (Kendari-Wakatobi-Kendari) and it just takes about 45 minutes on one trip.

Hoga Island is a Remote Divers Paradise

[:en]Hoga Island is a remote divers paradise found in the heart of the Wakatobi region of Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. This idyllic island has no roads, one small fishing village of about 30 families, and a few bungalows for visiting divers. Long white sandy beaches and spectacular pristine coral reefs make it a great place to enjoy some peace and quiet and get away from it all.

If you are planning a diving trip to Hoga Island, Wakatobi, there are a few things it is good to know before you arrive. So here are my top 10 tips for potential visitors to Hoga Island: Give yourself enough time to enjoy your visit – due to the remoteness of the area you really need a minimum of 4 days to a week to really kick back, relax and make the most of your visit and the Hoga diving opportunities.
To get to Hoga Island you will need to get to Wanci Island first. It is possible to fly here from Jakarta or Makassar on a daily basis (except Mondays). You can then take a daily public boat from Wanci to Hoga Island.

The best time of year to visit Hoga is between March and November. Although diving conditions are good throughout this period the best visibility and calmest waters are in April/May or Sept/Oct.
Accommodation in the various bungalows available is on a per person per day basis, and prices are inclusive of 3 meals a day, drinking water and hot drinks. Expect to pay between Rp200.000 to Rp 300.000 per person per day (2017 prices)

There is no electricity on Hoga Island, bring a torch and plenty of batteries. Dive Operators use generators and solar panels and will let you charge cameras and batteries.
There are no shops on Hoga so think about what you will need to bring with you and be prepared. For example, you might need; sanitary items, toothpaste, chocolate, batteries, mozzie repellent, and sarongs/sheets to sleep under. During July/August a few little local souvenir shops open up.

Most Hoga Dive Operators like to be culturally sensitive and will ask guests to cover up and wear sarongs/vest tops/shorts/t-shirts when walking around the Island and in accommodation areas. Bikini’s are fine on the beach but not for walking around in, as many locals feel uncomfortable with this.
There are 22 dive sites around Hoga Island, all reachable within half an hour by boat. Some favorite Hoga dive sites you should make sure to visit are; North Wall, Coral Gardens, Outer Pinnacle, Inner Pinnacle, Channel, Buoy 1, Langira, Ridge 1, Pak Kasim’s, and Inner Pinnacle.
If you can tear yourself away from the spectacular Hoga diving, arrange a visit to the friendly Sea Nomad Village of Sampela. You can move around this village of stilt houses by canoe or on little bridges, and meet the hundreds of smiling children. It is an experience you won’t forget!

On land don’t forget to look out for; trees full of fireflies which light up like Christmas trees, phosphorescence in your footprints as you walk along the splash zone at night time, large monitor lizards, the rare coconut crabs, and ‘Maleo’ a relative of the kiwi bird which is very rare and endemic to Sulawesi I have been visiting Hoga Island regularly for the last eight years and these are my top ten tips for divers planning a visit to Hoga Island in the Wakatobi.
