The last day of the trip was rafting in the Pekalen River, Probolinggo. Before this, we had already explored Ijen Crater and witnessed the mesmerizing blue flame, visited Sukamade to release baby turtles, and enjoyed the stunning sunrise over Mount Bromo. It was truly an amazing journey across East Java.
This final day of exploration began with memories of climbing to the summit of Ijen Crater, rewarded by the rare blue fire. We had crossed steep rocky paths and rivers to watch turtles lay their eggs at Sukamade Beach, then released hatchlings at sunrise. We had also discovered the exotic charm of Mount Bromo. Now, it was time to try rafting at the Pekalen River, one of Indonesia’s most famous rafting destinations.
Located in Probolinggo’s Condong district, about 1–1.5 hours from Bromo, Pekalen River is known nationwide for its challenging rapids and adrenaline‑filled adventure. Unlike my friends who had already tried rafting in Bali, this was my first time. Excitement and nervousness mixed as we prepared to explore the river.
We arrived at the rafting operator’s base camp after a bumpy ride through roads full of potholes. After a short chat with the staff, we were transferred to the rafting location by a local courier. Along the way, a motorcyclist accidentally nudged our car while avoiding a hole. He looked regretful, and we simply reminded him to be more careful before continuing. At the Songa Rafting base camp, another issue arose when the courier asked for extra payment. Fortunately, the rafting contact person clarified that the fee was already covered, preventing unnecessary charges.
Welcomed with bottled tea, we relaxed while I completed the payment administration. Soon, all participants gathered for a briefing. We were transported by truck through villages and uphill roads to the starting point. Grouped into teams of four or five, each with an experienced guide, we began rafting down the Pekalen River. The rapids challenged us, waterfalls amazed us, and bat caves added a unique thrill. Midway, we stopped to enjoy ginger tea and fried bananas before continuing. My friend, who had rafted in Bali, admitted Pekalen was cooler and more challenging, living up to its reputation.
The 12 km rafting route lasted about 2.5 hours. Afterward, we returned to base camp for showers and a simple but satisfying lunch. By late afternoon, we left Pekalen for Surabaya, a 3.5‑hour drive. That evening, we stopped at a restaurant on A. Yani Street for grilled chicken and sate, a typical Indonesian menu that my friends from Singapore enjoyed immensely. Nothing was left on the plates. Finally, we returned to the hotel where they would spend the night before flying home the next morning.
This trip was more than just sightseeing. It was about meeting new colleagues, learning about their daily lives, culture, and customs, and sharing discussions about our countries’ economies. Five days may seem short, but it was enough to build closeness and friendship. I believe someday I will meet them again in their country. Amen.
