Pelabuhan Ratu Overview

Pelabuhan Ratu is easily accessible from Jakarta or Bandung. Public buses depart regularly from Jakarta or Bogor, taking about 6–7 hours from Jakarta and 3–4 hours from Bogor depending on traffic. Traveling by private car can save at least an hour. For surfers, we recommend using chartered vehicles from Jakarta or Bandung to comfortably transport boards and gear.

Season and Weather

Like most of Indonesia, Pelabuhan Ratu has two main seasons:

  • Dry season: October to May, with sunny days and ideal surf conditions.
  • Rainy season: December to April, with heavier rainfall in January–February that can last all day.

The Southeast trade winds typically blow between 11 am and 4 pm, making mornings and late afternoons the best time to surf. Temperatures range from 23°C at night to 34°C midday in the dry season, and 27–30°C in the rainy season with high humidity.

Surfing in Cimaja – Pelabuhan Ratu

Cimaja – Pelabuhan Ratu is now recognized as one of the world’s popular surfing destinations and a training ground for Indonesian surf athletes. With easy accessibility and rapidly growing infrastructure, Cimaja has become a favorite surf spot. Waves average 5–7 ft year‑round, and during peak season can reach 10–12 ft.

Cimaja is only a short 300‑meter walk from the main road, passing rice fields and coconut trees, making it both scenic and convenient.

Surf Spots Around Pelabuhan Ratu

Indicator Point A shallow coral bottom break that works best with heavy swells (7 ft+) and high tide. Offers long walls and constant tubes up to 200 m.

Karang Papak A fun wave, ideal when Cimaja and Indicator are crowded or closing out. Works well with small swells and high tide.

Karang Hawu Located 15 minutes west of Cimaja, offering waves in both directions. Great for beginners and home to surf schools such as Indonesia Surfing Republic.

Karang Aji A clean wave wrapping around large rocks, delivering rides up to 100 m.

Cikembang A sand and rock bottom right‑hander, best with big swells from the south or southwest. Waves are mellow and suitable for longboarders and beginners, though experienced surfers can also enjoy it. Access requires a 20‑minute walk from the car park.

Noname Secret Point A reef break with barreling left‑handers about 80 m long. Accessible only by boat and recommended with a local surf guide. Clear blue water and white sandy beaches make it a favorite escape for local surfers. Best for intermediate to advanced surfers.

Surfing in Sawarna

Sawarna, located 1.5 hours west of Pelabuhan Ratu in Banten Province, is a rural area surrounded by rice fields and beautiful beaches. Known for its consistent waves up to 10 ft, Sawarna is both a surfing destination and a popular tourist spot. Affordable accommodations are easy to find, and the clean beaches combined with natural scenery make Sawarna a must‑visit.

When Cimaja waves are small, Sawarna offers more stable and powerful surf conditions.

Surfing in Ujung Genteng

Ujung Genteng lies 2–3 hours east of Pelabuhan Ratu, still within Sukabumi. The area has developed infrastructure, diverse accommodations, and stunning beaches. It has become a favorite destination for both domestic and international tourists.

Ombak Tujuh (Seven Waves) A legendary big‑wave spot capable of holding swells up to 20 ft (7 m). The coral ledge forces waves to rise suddenly, creating elevator drops near cliffs. Suitable only for experienced big‑wave surfers.

Turtles Point Located just 15 minutes from local accommodations, this barreling left‑hander works best at low tide. Waves range from 2–6 ft and can hold bigger depending on swell and wind. Nearby, Mama’s Losmen offers another left‑hander worth checking when conditions align.

Many travel agents organize surf tour packages combining Cimaja, Sawarna, and Ujung Genteng. Tours typically begin with pick‑up in Jakarta or Bandung and include guided access to secret surf spots.
