One of the most magical things to do at night in Yogyakarta is to witness the iconic Ramayana Ballet at Prambanan Temple, followed by a culinary adventure along Malioboro Street. This cultural evening combines breathtaking performance art with the rich flavors of traditional Javanese cuisine. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, this combination offers a perfect blend of heritage, entertainment, and local taste.
The Ramayana Ballet is a captivating open-air performance that brings the ancient Hindu epic to life through elegant dance and expressive drama—without dialogue. Set against the majestic backdrop of Prambanan Temple, the show has been enchanting audiences since 1961. It tells the story of Prince Rama’s heroic quest to rescue his wife Sita (Sinta) from the evil king Rahwana, blending classical Javanese dance with gamelan music and stunning choreography inspired by the temple’s bas-reliefs.
Featuring over 200 skilled dancers and musicians, the Ramayana Ballet is held every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 19:30 to 21:30. During the dry season (May to October), the show takes place on an outdoor stage with the illuminated temple as its dramatic backdrop. In the rainy season (November to April), performances move to the indoor Trimurti Theatre. This timeless spectacle is not just entertainment—it’s a celebration of Javanese culture and a must-see for anyone exploring Yogyakarta’s vibrant night scene.

The ballet performance was magical with colorful costumes, graceful movements, and the temple backdrop making it feel truly special, while the food adventure after was just as fun—Malioboro’s buzzing street vibe, tasty gudeg, satay, and endless snacks gave the night the perfect mix of culture and flavor, making it an easy 5-star experience.
The Ramayana Ballet at Prambanan was truly impressive – the dancers, costumes, and gamelan music brought the epic story to life in a magical setting with the illuminated temple as the backdrop. The atmosphere was enchanting and felt like a once‑in‑a‑lifetime cultural experience. Afterward, the culinary walk along Malioboro was fun, with plenty of tasty street food and a lively vibe. The only downside was that the food tour felt a bit rushed, and some stalls were crowded, so I couldn’t enjoy every dish at a relaxed pace.
We enjoyed the mix of culture and food on this tour. The ballet performance was unique and worth seeing, though it was a bit long and hard to follow at times. The night culinary walk at Malioboro was lively, but also very busy, which made it less relaxing. The guide was friendly and helpful, which balanced things out.
Great evening experience – the ballet show was impressive, with amazing dancers and storytelling. Loved the vibe at Prambanan at night. The culinary tour along Malioboro was tasty, though a bit rushed. Still, the mix of culture and food made it worth it. 4 stars from me!
Watching the Ramayana Ballet with my girlfriend under the lights of Prambanan Temple was unforgettable. The atmosphere was romantic, and the story was beautifully told through dance. Later, walking together at Malioboro and trying street food made the night even more special. It felt like the perfect date – 5 stars for sure.
